DET Avonte Maddox
NFL player. Position: S. Team: DET.
Quick Facts
- Position: S (Safety)
- Team: DET (Detroit Lions)
- Prior team: Philadelphia Eagles
2026 Outlook
Veteran safety acquired from Philadelphia Eagles in 2025 to provide secondary depth. With both Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph sidelined by major injuries (Achilles and knee respectively), Maddox has emerged as the primary fill-in safety for Detroit's defense. His 2025 performance with the Eagles—79.1 overall PFF grade over 342 snaps with 75.0+ coverage and run defense marks—positions him as a competent short-term replacement rather than a long-term starter (per Two Detroit Lions Players Expected to 'Step Up' Amid Injuries). The Lions' defensive scheme relies heavily on safety coverage flexibility, and Maddox's ability to operate as a true free safety gives the team a viable interim option while Branch and Joseph work through recovery. His production level suggests he can stabilize coverage but won't match the All-Pro range of his injured teammates.
Role / Depth Chart
Starting free safety (temporary) in place of injured Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph. Expected to operate alongside Chuck Clark at safety during injury absence.
Injury Status
Placed on injured reserve with foot injury sustained against Buffalo Bills. Out for season (per Detroit Lions Ink Safety Off Steelers Practice Squad, Cut Linebacker).
