Darren Waller
NFL tight end. Currently unrestricted free agent.
Quick Facts
- Position: TE
- Age: 33
- Status: Free agent (2026 offseason)
- Career: Eagles (2013-2021), Cardinals (2021-2023), Dolphins (2025, 9 games)
2026 Outlook
Cut day placement (Aug 30): USA Today's cut day analysis suggests Waller is "likely" to be cut to the practice squad rather than kept on the 53-man roster. Despite signing with Carolina in August, the crowded TE room with Tommy Tremble and Ja'Tavion Sanders competing suggests limited fantasy upside. Waller has veteran minimum access to practice squad, allowing Panthers to bring him back if injuries hit the room or as playoff depth. (per 9 biggest names on NFL roster cut day 2026)
Veteran TE coming off a comeback 2025 season with Miami: 6 receiving TDs in just 9 games after coming out of retirement. Signed 1-year deal with Carolina Panthers in early August. At 33, Waller brings proven pass-catching ability but battles multiple injuries. With new Panthers associate head coach/offensive specialist Darrell Bevell (who mentored Waller in Miami as passing game coordinator), Waller projects as a secondary target with upside in play-action situations. Joins a TE room fronted by veteran Tommy Tremble, with Ja'Tavion Sanders competing as well — Waller's arrival signals Panthers value his experience despite the crowded room (per Free agent TE Darren Waller, Panthers agree to 1-year deal).
Role / Depth Chart
Likely a depth piece or rotational TE for a win-now contender. Contenders with TE concerns (Seahawks, Rams, Bills, Chiefs listed as evaluating) are thin at the position but hesitant to invest long-term in a 33-year-old. Short-term mismatch value only.

Open Questions
- Will any contender use Waller as a stop-gap third option, or does his lack of a long-term deal signal teams view him as a trade/waiver wire target only?
