2026 Outlook
One of the biggest offseason risers: Downs is easily one of the biggest risers from this offseason. One year ago, the Colts' WR group was crowded with Downs in the slot, Alec Pierce as the X, Michael Pittman Jr. as the high-volume Z, and AD Mitchell as WR4 depth. Now Mitchell is gone and Pittman was traded, leaving the room much lighter. The team is ready to give Downs a look as the starting Z in addition to slot duties, which gives him a path to playing in two-receiver sets—something that was a significant roadblock last year when the Colts ran more heavy personnel after drafting Tyler Warren. He appears to have bulked up a bit to handle more snaps. Downs is an "awesome talent and one of the top separators in the league" and this is positioned as finally his year for a consistent, high-volume role (per Fantasy Football Roundtable: Here are our biggest offseason risers going into the 2026 NFL season).
FantasyPros also boldly predicts Downs will break through in 2026 as the top fantasy receiver for the Colts. On his contract year, Downs had career lows in receptions (58) and receiving yards (556) last season, but the Pittman trade positions him as a much more significant part of the Colts' offense. His short-area explosiveness and run-after-catch ability are well-suited to a scheme that will lean on shorter passes given Daniel Jones recovering from a torn Achilles. Downs' 7.2-yard average depth of target fits Jones's new constraints, making him the clear slot option and highest-volume receiver behind Tyler Warren's role as more of a blocker. (per 10 Bold Predictions for the 2026 Fantasy Football Season, 2026 NFL Preview: Which 10 Contract-Year Players Are Most Likely To Breakout?)
Week 9 home matchup against Dallas will feature an unusual dynamic: Downs will face off against his younger brother Caleb Downs, a safety for the Cowboys, in what will be their first on-field confrontation since high school. Josh is eager for the opportunity to prove himself against his brother and expects significant head-to-head reps in the slot. (per 3 Most Intriguing Indianapolis Colts Matchups in 2026)
Boone sleeper projection (June 2026): Justin Boone highlights Downs as a dangerous playmaker with sleeper upside. With Michael Pittman Jr. (111 targets) traded away, the Colts' passing attack will pivot around Alec Pierce (rehabbing from ankle injury), Downs, and TE Tyler Warren. Downs' short-area explosiveness and 7.1 reception/66.4 receiving yard average during Joe Flacco's Week 9 starts (seven-game sample in 2024) demonstrates what he can do with competent QB play and a featured role. Being drafted as WR48 outside top 100 picks is a value miss given his opportunity. He has the skills to become an impactful fantasy weapon if he gets the chance. ADP around WR48 makes him a late-round target with potential for consistent weekly production. (per 2026 Fantasy Football: Justin Boone's top sleeper picks at WR)
SI sleeper projection (June 2026): Sports Illustrated identifies Downs at #91 ADP (#43 among WRs) as a must-draft value. With Pittman's departure, a 111-target hole must be filled; Downs received 88 targets in 2025 (566 yards, 4 TDs) and is the only Colts receiver capable of taking on heavy workload beyond Alec Pierce. His target share is expected to increase significantly, making a top-30 WR finish "extremely likely." (per Kyler Murray Headlines 4 Fantasy Football Must-Draft ADP Values for 2026)
Short-area target distribution (July 2026): PFF's breakout analysis shows why Downs is positioned for a significant role change in 2026. Pierce drew only 14 targets on short passes (≤9 yards) in 2025, down from 38 as a rookie. Pittman captured 68 of the team's short-area targets last season. With Pittman gone, Downs' short-area explosiveness and run-after-catch ability position him to inherit a substantial chunk of those targets, particularly given Daniel Jones' Achilles recovery (which may limit deeper passes). Downs' 7.2-yard average depth of target fits well into a scheme that will lean on short, quick passes, making him a high-volume receiving option in the slot (per Fantasy Football: Breakout wide receivers for 2026 fantasy drafts]).
CBS Sports confirms Downs could see added pass-catching opportunities heading into 2026, with the Pittman trade opening up targets previously unavailable in the crowded passing attack. (per Colts' Tyler Warren: To maintain key role in Year 2)
Role / Depth Chart
Third receiver in Colts lineup heading into training camp. Post-minicamp depth chart (June 2026) shows Downs as part of a three-receiver rotation with Alec Pierce (recovering from ankle injury) and Ashton Dulin competing for snaps. With Pittman traded away, Downs positioned to see increased slot usage and potential two-receiver set appearances. (per Takeaways From Colts Depth Chart After Minicamp)
Injury Status
Healthy as of minicamp. No injury concerns noted.
