2026 Outlook
Trey Lance's Chargers backup QB competition against DJ Uiagalelei has largely been decided in Uiagalelei's favor heading into Week 1. In Thursday's preseason finale, Uiagalelei went 11-of-18 for 141 yards and generally looked more competent running the Chargers' offense, while Lance went 0-for-2 with a three-and-out and a fourth-down sack. HC Jim Harbaugh offered little clarity but said Uiagalelei "did some good things." The 2021 No. 3 overall pick (by 49ers) still hasn't developed significantly, and at age 25 entering his sixth NFL season, his career trajectory continues to decline. Lance's dual-threat ability (85 rushing yards on 17 carries in limited 2025 action) remains a potential asset if injuries strike Justin Herbert, but his window to prove himself in Los Angeles appears narrowing after an uneven preseason battle with an undrafted practice-squad QB.
