2026 Outlook
The league's highest-paid guard, Trey Smith has worked his way from offensive tackle prospect to elite guard with three consecutive Pro Bowls. ESPN's 2026 survey ranked him #1 overall among interior offensive linemen. Evaluators praised his "rare combination of size, athleticism, strength and finish," with one AFC executive comparing him to prime Jason Peters. His win rates include 72.1% in the running game and 95.2% in the passing game, though some note he could benefit from more technical consistency and less flash in his play (per Execs, coaches, scouts rank top NFL guards, centers for 2026 - ESPN).
September 2 update: Smith is working his way back after a hip injury kept him out for much of August. He's expected to be ready for Week 1 (per Patrick Mahomes Injury Update: What's the Latest on the Chiefs Superstar and Will He...)
September 4 update: Smith provided updates on his hip injury status as Chiefs hosted tryouts. Expected to be ready for Week 1 vs Denver (per Kansas City Chiefs hosting multiple players for tryouts Friday, including former Cowboys and Cardinals tight end)
September 5 clarification — no feud with Josh Simmons: Speculation emerged that Smith's September 3 comments about "never feeling 100%" were a jab at struggling left tackle Josh Simmons. ESPN's Nate Taylor clarified this was not the case, stating Smith's comments were not directed at Simmons. The drama was media-created, not real locker room friction.
