2026 Outlook

Positioned as underrated veteran value in Carolina. Hubbard finished as RB12 in fppg in 2024 with 1,195 rushing yards, 43 receptions, 171 receiving yards, and 11 TDs, but faded after returning early from injury last season in an attempt to hold off Rico Dowdle's challenge. With Dowdle now in Pittsburgh and second-year player Jonathon Brooks still recovering from multiple serious knee injuries with no guarantee of returning to form, Hubbard is the favorite to lead the Panthers backfield. His one-year absence from elite production could create a discount opportunity—analysts are sleeping on him despite being only one year removed from a strong season (per Justin Boone's 2026 RB Rankings Update).

Hubbard is a bounce-back candidate after a disappointing 2025 following his strong 2024 breakout. He suffered a Week 4 injury (same day as Lamar Jackson) that opened the door for Rico Dowdle to take over the backfield. In just two games while Hubbard was sidelined, Dowdle rushed for 389 yards at 7.4 yards per carry, caught 7 passes for 84 yards, and scored 2 TDs—convincing the Panthers to move forward with Dowdle as the feature back. However, Dowdle has since been traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers, eliminating the primary competition for touches. With only second-year player Jonathon Brooks as potential competition (Brooks has played just 9 carries in two years due to recurring ACL injuries with no guarantee he returns to form), Hubbard regains bellcow status entering 2026 (per 2026 Fantasy Football Bounce-Back Candidates: DJ Moore Will Find New Life Paired With Josh Allen).

With Dowdle's departure, the Panthers have 275 vacated touches available, and Hubbard is poised to capture most of them. At RB29 in ADP, he figures to start the 2026 season as Carolina's lead back, though Jonathon Brooks' recovery from dual ACL tears could eventually carve out a secondary role with involvement in the passing game (per 5 Position Battles to Watch: Running Backs (2026 Fantasy Football) - FantasyPros). Despite a disappointing 2025 (3.8 YPC), Hubbard remains projected starter entering 2026; however, the Panthers' league-worst pass-catching TE group, below-average WR corps, and weak QB play (21st in passing yards) limit ceiling upside for both Hubbard and Brooks regardless of backfield split (per Panthers RB named among NFL's potential fantasy football steals - Yahoo Sports).

Role / Depth Chart

Starting RB for Carolina Panthers. Lead back in the backfield competition. Secondary competition from recovering second-year player Jonathon Brooks (clearing practice participation mid-June after two ACL injuries), and depth options Trevor Etienne and AJ Dillon.

Injury Status

Healthy entering 2026. Recovering from Week 4 2025 injury that sidelined him for two games and led to backfield time-split entering the rest of the season.
